In a fervor to cut government budgets and services, some forget that the reductions are shouldered by loyal and hard-working state employees who are our family, friends, and neighbors.

During my tenure in the Texas Legislature, even as the state faced serious budget restraints, my colleagues and I worked to support our state employees while maintaining a balanced budget.

Here are a few examples:
2013 -- strengthened the Teacher Retirement System with a $530 million increase in state contributions.
2015 -- set in place a plan to increase the state's contribution to the state employee retirement system and make the fund actuarially sound by 2017.
2015 -- secured funding to increase salary classifications for nurses in high turnover positions at our state hospital, state law enforcement officers, and TDCJ correctional officers.
